Twelfth Report; Father's Day

Father's day! Ah, a lovely day, I will say; remembering the male who, hopefully, raised us all with love and care. No, I'm not about to ask all of you about your fathers--I'm not really the intrusive sort, though...! I do have a sort of puzzle for all of you. It's one that I would love to tell my own father.


PUZZLE 011: Two masked men

The puzzle works like this. I'm going to tell you a scenario, and using yes or no questions you must deduce exactly what is happening in this situation. I can only answer yes or no--or other variants of those two answers--so make sure to ask the right questions! No limit to how many you ask, of course... Here's your scenario:

A man leaves home and, after making three left turns, he ends up back at home, and finds two masked men waiting for him.

So, can you deduce what's happening here?

Ah. Cricket. It's a sport from my country--England, specifically, though I'm assuming you have no idea what that is either.

And likely.... If there are more of these nation-imposters out there.

[justicereigns]

Actually, I'm becoming familiar with that one. You're the third or fourth person I've met from there.

Nation-impostor?

[abstruse]

Ah! Well, there you go; decent country. ((a big of a shrug in his tone.))


Ah, yes. Unfortunately, I'm highly sceptical on the fact of them actually being "nations". Though, it doesn't matter; I'll let them claim what they want.

[justicereigns]

I'll take your word on it.

[Whoosh. No one's given Smoker the country talk yet.] Why would they be nations?

[abstruse]

Because they're nutters, perhaps?

[justicereigns]

They'd fit right in then.

[abstruse]

That's putting it simply. ((sighs.))

Hm. Well, you seem sane enough for a puzzle addict.

[Feel free to take offense to that, he's basically expecting Clive to.]

[abstruse]

Ah, well thank you. It's not often I hear such sentiment, and I figure it's an honour to have coming from you.

((How could he?! Clive already knows he's batshit crazy.))

[A small barking laugh.]

An honor is it? You're quite welcome then. So you was your father a fan of baseball, puzzles, or both?

[abstruse]

I go by Clive, not you. ((chuckles.))

My father was a fan of baseball, oddly. Not native to our country, but he found it to be a much more interesting game than cricket. I can't say I'm surprised; someone of his literary talent tended to have contempt for the higher ups.

[justicereigns]

Clive then. I'm Smoker.

[A head tilt.] Baseball's a great sport. Though I can't say I'm familiar with what Cricket is. Who was it he had contempt for?

[abstruse]

The corruption of government, and he did so love to expose it. Journalist's duty, you know.

[justicereigns]

He sounds like a fascinating man. [Damn Smoker's curiosity is peaked. It helps that he loves newspapers.]

Cricket is something the brass -- err, higher-ups in office in your government favor then? And baseball isn't? [Granted, pirates play baseball in his world, but the marines have games and teams too so the idea that sports are connected to government corruption without it being slave-trade or martial arts related is almost an anathema to him.]

[abstruse]

Not necessarily. It's just a popular national sport that our country and its more recent former colonies enjoy playing together. Baseball I've only seen in America.

[justicereigns]

Is America less corrupt? [Forgive his skepticism but he's of the belief that corruption is everywhere.]

[abstruse]

Doubted, however, it's so much easier to think the grass really is greener on the other side.

[justicereigns]

Until one goes there.

Baseball is a great sport though. For whatever that counts.

[abstruse]

I'm sure it is. It looks interesting, at the least.

[justicereigns]

You've never played it?

[abstruse]

Sport was never my thing.

[justicereigns]

Hm...

Well, if you're ever interested sometime, maybe we can find a ball and glove.

I take it puzzles are more your thing?

[abstruse]

Well, more accurately, I take the intellectual over the physical. I'm getting this impression that people think those from my universe are obsessed with only the bookish approach to puzzles. I prefer real-life application, as it tends to be somewhat more beneficial.

Do you often have a lot of call to apply to puzzles to real life?
