Twelfth Report; Father's Day

Father's day! Ah, a lovely day, I will say; remembering the male who, hopefully, raised us all with love and care. No, I'm not about to ask all of you about your fathers--I'm not really the intrusive sort, though...! I do have a sort of puzzle for all of you. It's one that I would love to tell my own father.


PUZZLE 011: Two masked men

The puzzle works like this. I'm going to tell you a scenario, and using yes or no questions you must deduce exactly what is happening in this situation. I can only answer yes or no--or other variants of those two answers--so make sure to ask the right questions! No limit to how many you ask, of course... Here's your scenario:

A man leaves home and, after making three left turns, he ends up back at home, and finds two masked men waiting for him.

So, can you deduce what's happening here?

[There's a giggle as the audio clicks on. It helps that this has given her rather fond memories of her own father, she supposes.]

Another puzzle, Clive? [It's been a while since the last one, anyways...she almost sounds excited.] I wouldn't mind giving it a shot this time.

Hmm...

[She gets to ask questions first, though, right?]

Are the masked men dangerous?

[abstruse]

Hmm... No, I'd say. Assuming you mean dangerous as in trying to physically harm him.

[waytoopatient]

[Hmm, yes. That's exactly what she meant, since her father's line of work really leads her to assume the worst about these things. But if they aren't trying to harm him, why the masks...?]

Do they want something from him?

[abstruse]

No, they don't.

...Then...why were they waiting?

[Hm, Ran tilts her head at this, blurting the question out naturally--]

[waytoopatient]

[Ah.

But then she remembers.]

Oh, wait. It's...yes or no questions only, isn't it...

[abstruse]

((chuckles.)) No harm no foul!

[waytoopatient]

[...Darn it.

Hmm-- moving on then, she supposes.]

Were the masks...part of a costume?

[There must have been a reason the men were wearing them.]

[abstruse]

No, not a costume.

[waytoopatient]

[She notices that emphasis-- but if not a costume, then what?]

Something else...a disguise?

[That's kind of the same thing though, isn't it?

No--]

A...uniform?

[Admittedly it's kind of a stab in the dark. She can't really think of any uniforms that have masks...

Can she?]

[abstruse]

To a disguise, the answer is no, but an outfit, you get a yes!

An outfit...

[Hmm.]

They're both wearing the same thing, then? Is that...significant?

[abstruse]

They aren't, and yes it is.

[waytoopatient]

[She should really be writing this down or something. But instead, she just scratches her head and keeps thinking.

Two masked men. Waiting for a man who left home and turned three times...

Three times--]

And the man who left his home...if he turned three times, doesn't that mean he just went in a big square?

[abstruse]

Ah, yes! Essentially, he did.

[waytoopatient]

Now why would he do that...?

[said mostly to herself as she thinks. hmmm.]

Were the men already there before he left?

[She'd assumed that they weren't, and that only appeared afterwards, but--]

Indeed they were.

She feels like she should be writing these answers down, almost. This detail feels significant too, but she still feels like there's something she's missing.

But what is it...?

This is usually when her dad would come up with a stupid idea, or...

When Conan would suddenly come up with the right one. She could consult him, of course, but he's got better things to worry about...]

[Slight shift in topic at least for a brief moment, while she comes up with more questions.]

No. Personally, I think anyone who figures out a puzzle right away is a bit of a fraud.

... [Phew! Well, then--] I'm actually a little relieved to hear that.

[bit of a laugh. because she seriously kind of feels like it shouldn't be taking her this long.]

Well, I think!

...Mm, I actually didn't know it was father's day until you told me.

[She supposes it's a little different, for Japan. To be fair, this is the last place she'd want to celebrate it, but...]
